Besides being a gearhead and writer, I consider myself an avid gamer. But I am not nearly as hardcore as some of my friends, who compete in national and international tournaments for huge cash prizes. There is also the prestige that comes with having the fastest keyboard skills and reflexes with the BFG cannon. While I have heard of prizes topping $100,000 in scope, never have I heard of a contest giving away a fast car to the fastest gamer.

But according to Mustangblog, Quakecon ’09 is doing just that; giving away a 2010 Shelby GT500 to one lucky gamer.

Many of you probably haven’t heard of Quakecon, so allow me to bring you up to speed. Quakecon is a four-day celebration of the video game Quake, a first-person shoot with hardly any back story but lots of weapons. The premise is simple; kill the other guy (or girl) before they kill you. Quakers take their tournaments seriously, and this year’s Quakecon, held at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas, Texas, offers a top prize of $75,000. While Quakecon isn't the only game to be played, it will likely be the most popular.

But we are here to talk cars, and the car in question is a 540 horsepower Shelby GT500. Part of the “Ultimate Power Up” sweepstakes, it is sponsored by the voice communication software Ventrillo. 100 lucky participants will be awarded a raffle ticket for completing various trials, such as participating in the Quakecon Pro level tournament (there are professional gamers) to Quick Draw tournaments. Make no mistake about it; this is not an “easy win” as these gamers devout plenty of time and energy into mastering their l33t skillz. In the past, Ventrillo has raffled off sports cars like the Corvette to lucky winners as well. But will the GT500 end up in the hands of a pimply teenager who hasn’t seen the light of day for a year? Hey, its Quakecon; anything is possible.
