2009 was the year of the Camaro, but 2010 is all about the Mustang. After the woefully underpowered but freshly redesigned Mustang still gave the Camaro a run for its money, Ford finally got around to getting better engines in its muscle car. While much of the focus has been on the 412 horsepower 5.0 V8, the 305 horsepower V6 has raised a lot of eyebrows.

Motor Trend recently got a chance to ride shotgun in the 2011 V6 Mustang, and their impressions leave us a little jealous and definitely intrigued.

Writer Arthur St. Antoine got to plop his rear down in the right hand seat, while Ford’s top lead foot Jamie Cullen took him for a spin. St. Antoine seemed to come away impressed, and with good reason. The outgoing 4.0 liter V6 was over forty years old, and the new 3.7 liter engine delivers almost 100 more horsepower and 40 ft-lbs of torque while also promising much better gas mileage (up to 30 mpg with an automatic on the highway).

Ford clearly set its sights on the Camaro with the new V6, and bests it by one horsepower and one MPG. Going that extra step, Ford even plans to introduce a performance package for its V6 Mustang that includes a 3:31 rear gear, a better suspension, and 19” wheels. We expect more than a few people will throw a turbocharger on the new V6 (though we’re still holding out hope for an EcoBoost Mustang). Check out the Motor Trend article for St. Antoine’s full impression, and maybe get ready to write a deposit check. The new Mustang is going to be a monster.
